Questioned Monday by concerned citizens about toxic fumes that emit two shops of bagels in the Mile End, the municipal authorities have affirmed that the case was closely followed, without making a specific commitment.

A dozen residents of the Mile-End living close to shops, St-Viateur Bagel and Fairmount Bagel, have benefited from the city council to express their dissatisfaction at the volume of toxic particles released from the chimneys of these institutions. It would be three to four times higher than the limit allowed by the regulations on the sanitation of the air of the City.

Repeatedly questioned on this subject during the session of questions of the citizens, the environmental manager for the City of Montreal, Réal Ménard is simply to repeat that the case was closely followed and that efforts were underway on the part of conservators to comply with the regulations.

He also recalled that Fairmount Bagel was recently sentenced to two fines. The two amounts, $ 5,000 and $ 10,000, have never been paid, as indicated in The Journal in its edition of Friday.

    Language of wood

“This is the wooden language of a politician, lamented Monday, François Grenier, one of the residents concerned. That makes nine years that the City is aware that these chimneys emit toxic fumes. Now, it is time that it moves. “

“I was expecting this kind of response, explained Monday Benoît Chaput, one of the citizens who challenged Mr. Ménard. What I hope is that bringing this debate into the public spotlight will prompt the City to act really. “

Among these citizens, many are those who worry about the impact that the smoke of the ovens bagels and the fine particles it carries may have on their health.

“My eight year-old boy is coughing a lot and it is true that I wonder the extent to which it is bound, stated Alexis Chartrand, who lives on Clark street, near Fairmount Bagel for the past four years. The goal is not to make them close shop, I love it, me, the bagels. It is simply necessary that they find a way to prepare in better conditions for the environment. “
