MONTREAL | Some individuals provide rabbits and other animals, as a gift for Easter. Unfortunately, these adoptions wellies often with abandon, notify the SPCA and the MAPAQ, which call for caution.

The ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has invited the population to think well before embarking on the purchase of animals.

“For example, the ability to meet the basic needs of the animal throughout its life, such as swimming for the ducks, as well as costs related to maintenance, such as veterinary care and the purchase of food,” including a call to the consciousness of the ministry.

For its part, the Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCA) of Montreal, holds free workshops to raise awareness on the subject this weekend. Each year, the organization for the protection of animals receives nearly 250 rabbits in the months following the leave of pascal.

“When people come to us to wear them, they say that they have received as a gift at Easter, and that they were not aware of what commitment to the animal involved,” said Anita Kapuscinska, a spokesperson for the SPCA.

“Rabbits are beautiful animals, but it is necessary to know what one is going”, she added.

According to the spokesman, the public is not necessarily aware that it is active animals who need to run and jump a minimum of four hours per day outside of their pen in order to preserve their mental health.

A rabbit that lack of exercise will become restless and possibly more aggressive towards humans. “It is as if we were locked in our room 24 hours on 24,” stressed Anita Kapuscinska.

Another unknown on the cute little beasts : the carrot ingested in large quantities may be harmful to their health. The vegetable should only be a treat for the animal.
