We often hear that young people watch more series than films. Except for those stories there, whose format has evolved the other way.
Nothing is lost, everything is transformed ! On the one hand, the matter is already there, we agree. The plot, the characters, their links, the important events … Nevertheless, the writing is not the same, between a series composed of multiple episodes and a good feature film in one go. We’ll have to ask the guys who dealt with these transitions to find out more. In any case, to say that one watches only series is exaggerated and one proves it by showing the examples where we look at cinematographic versions of what our parents were watching on TV .
Scooby-Doo
Distributed from 1969 to 1970 on CBS, the original series “Scooby-Doo, where are you?” Had introduced the four adolescent hunters of supernatural mysteries, aboard their van. More than forty years later, in 2002, a film was released with Freddie Prinze Junior and Sarah Michelle Gellar in particular. Well, well, it was not crazy . Some funny moments of course, nothing crazy despite everything. Our parents were lucky again. It was really better before.

Another thing that connects us to our parents. Or who differentiates us! At the time of its first broadcast between 1976 and 1981, the series stunned ABC. Normal, seeing three women played the main roles were not usual, far from it! The girl power and comedy-sexy side was out of the ordinary, with a success to the key. The film with Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu respects the delirium but it does not have the same flavor. The idea is necessarily less transgressive today, it is certain. Starsky and Hutch

The series was on ABC from 1963 (until 1967) while the film with Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones squatted the cinema in 1993.
The Untouchables (The Untouchables in VO)
Probably the best adaptation, to credit Brian de Palma. Stretched over four highly fictional seasons (between 1959 and 1963), the original series on ABC focused more on the sides than the real fight against the prohibition of agent Eliot Ness. The 1987 film, where the agent is incarnated by Kevin Costner and the mafioso Al Capone by Robert De Niro, made much better the very special functioning of the economy in this era. Critical and commercial success, the feature film even brought back a trophy for the best supporting role to Sean Connery . Let us confirm all the same the basis: the works were both based on the memories of Eliot Ness and Oscar Fraley.
The Brady Tribe (The Brady Bunch in VO)
The least known of the lot, no doubt! Also broadcast on American ABC between 1969 and 1974, this series showed our parents the hectic life of a family of six children, with its share of parallel or cross stories. A nice thing, which does not break three legs to a duck and will even be canceled after five seasons. Before being taken with humor in a parodic film and successful in 1995 . The creators have just played on the old school side of the series, amplified it, made fun of it, while including us in delirium.
Impossible mission
And hop, second successful challenge for Brian de Palma! Because his film showing us Tom Cruise in BG mode in 1996 is well inspired by the series that CBS was rocking between 1966 and 1973 (and ABC, between 88 and 90). But evolution is obvious: more actions! The real and the actor have pushed the trick: one of the secret agents finds himself trapped by a mole, which puts to him the murders of the rest of the team on the back. Tom Cruise aka Ethan Hunt must then identify him, and it will move! Supposed to be scary, they turn out quite funny and fun. What made us want to know them and hang out with them, when we had to be afraid.
An allegory of the appeal – against appeal. You think … and then it’s the other way around. A known blow and my faith always effective when it is well done, then why deprive it? There the writers create a monster that turns out to be a good paw. Gentile, funny, sensitive … So, once is not custom, one would have become a friend with him! Finally, with them, because we have several examples in mind more or less known.
Guy Mann (“X-Files”)
While Mulder and Scully think they are suing a big-footed villain for horrendous grizzly murders, who likes to turn into a monster, it’s the other way around. Guy Mann proves to be a lizard, at the base, before being bitten one day by a human . This gave him the ability to transform himself into a man and feel the same vicissitudes of life as our: to want to be recognized, loved. Not bad for a penny.
Clement (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”)
Assumed to be a demon, Clement is a cream. Adoring Buffy and Dawn, playing poker-kitten with Spike, a loyal and devoted friend , he really does not deserve to be judged on his appearances. It’s true that his big ears dangling, his wrinkled skin and his growths grow back a bit, but “Clem” is a guy to the cool fact.
Five (“Seven Little Monsters”)

Cousin Itt (“The Addams Family”)

Herman Munster (“The Monsters”)
Creature born by Dr. Frankenstein – which is easily understood by the resemblance – Herman Munster left Germany at a very young age for England. Sweetums (“The Muppet Show”)
Of a high height, this hairy beast surpasses its human congeners, just as it often ruffles with its air constantly jaded and discontented. His bushy eyebrows (Fillon is a small player next to him) as well as his huge piss could make freak but Sweetums compensates by a passion for singing and dancing . Finally, this humble and sensitive monster loves to cuddle. Then as a beast of nightmare, we saw worse.
Cookie Monster (“Sesame street”)
Like an old-fashioned puppet of Guignols, covered with a thick blue fur, with the behavior of a kid. Of child, rather! Hardly able to express himself correctly ( “Me want cookie” ), with a limited vocabulary and a chaotic grammar, he simply eats whatever he can, all the time . Cookies if possible, if not what happens nearby. Much like the kids, they quickly loved Cookie Monster. If it were supposed to frighten them, the record is a failure. Which one would you choose?

History stutters. The cinema, too.
This is not a bug in the matrix: according to “Hollywood Reporter” , the Warner wants to relaunch the dream machine / cash Matrix through new films. Men in Black

The Lion King / Aladdin

A remake of a remake. This is how we should understand the next adaptation of “Scarface” , which will succeed the films of Howard Hawks (1932) and Brian de Palma (1983). Old, clichés, abused, slow, absurd: the qualifiers can vary infinitely. Still, you love these films, and you do not count the times you looked at them.
If we were known, it would be the kind of record that would weigh on us like a sword of Damocles. Enemies would try to make us sing by putting pressure on us: “Do as you like, but if you do that, I’ll talk … about your cinematic tastes …” So much to assume right away. Without any swinging either, only five small examples. Otherwise it’s hot, to say everything …
Bloodsport
We needed at least one with our JCVD. We could have made a list only with his films from elsewhere (Kickboxer, Street Fighter, The Big Tournament, …). Going to Bloodsport, where the beautiful, kind and generous Frank will do everything to avenge his old friend (a few days) , the rocking wrestler Ray Jackson overwhelmed by this scraping of Li. Love actually
Served by a cast 3 stars (and still, we could say much more), this film of 2003 passes unfailingly on the television, several times a year. At Christmas, during the holidays (all or almost all), when the programmers have already redone their catalog … And you again and again these ten stories of love, some of which are related. The opportunity to see London, Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley … A little guilty pleasure.
Ali G
