We often hear that young people watch more series than films. Except for those stories there, whose format has evolved the other way.
Nothing is lost, everything is transformed ! On the one hand, the matter is already there, we agree. The plot, the characters, their links, the important events … Nevertheless, the writing is not the same, between a series composed of multiple episodes and a good feature film in one go. We’ll have to ask the guys who dealt with these transitions to find out more. In any case, to say that one watches only series is exaggerated and one proves it by showing the examples where we look at cinematographic versions of what our parents were watching on TV .
Scooby-Doo
Distributed from 1969 to 1970 on CBS, the original series “Scooby-Doo, where are you?” Had introduced the four adolescent hunters of supernatural mysteries, aboard their van. More than forty years later, in 2002, a film was released with Freddie Prinze Junior and Sarah Michelle Gellar in particular. Well, well, it was not crazy . Starsky and Hutch

The series was on ABC from 1963 (until 1967) while the film with Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones squatted the cinema in 1993.
The Untouchables (The Untouchables in VO)
Probably the best adaptation, to credit Brian de Palma. Stretched over four highly fictional seasons (between 1959 and 1963), the original series on ABC focused more on the sides than the real fight against the prohibition of agent Eliot Ness. The 1987 film, where the agent is incarnated by Kevin Costner and the mafioso Al Capone by Robert De Niro, made much better the very special functioning of the economy in this era. Critical and commercial success, the feature film even brought back a trophy for the best supporting role to Sean Connery . Let us confirm all the same the basis: the works were both based on the memories of Eliot Ness and Oscar Fraley.
The Brady Tribe (The Brady Bunch in VO)
The least known of the lot, no doubt! Also broadcast on American ABC between 1969 and 1974, this series showed our parents the hectic life of a family of six children, with its share of parallel or cross stories. A nice thing, which does not break three legs to a duck and will even be canceled after five seasons. Before being taken with humor in a parodic film and successful in 1995 . The creators have just played on the old school side of the series, amplified it, made fun of it, while including us in delirium.
Impossible mission
And hop, second successful challenge for Brian de Palma! Because his film showing us Tom Cruise in BG mode in 1996 is well inspired by the series that CBS was rocking between 1966 and 1973 (and ABC, between 88 and 90). But evolution is obvious: more actions! The real and the actor have pushed the trick: one of the secret agents finds himself trapped by a mole, which puts to him the murders of the rest of the team on the back. Tom Cruise aka Ethan Hunt must then identify him, and it will move! Reflex, when a series has good reviews, it is assumed that it comes from the States. While this is not always the case.
Let us pay tribute to the little ones. To the outsiders. To David against Goliath. Without having similar means, these series gain to be known, therefore to be seen. And then it will change a bit, because it must be admitted that the majority of our series are stamped USA Go, change is now (it goes, we do not laugh a little …).
3% (Brazil)
A series launched by Netflix in Brazil, where the site has established itself, faithful to its habit (cf Marseille in France). In short, we see a society divided between the rich and the poor, clearly. It is also the subject of the plot: a selection is put in place in order to give a chance to young people (20 years old) despaired to join the Other Shore , that is to say the haves, the Privileged. Convened in a building, they chained the tests, individual or collective, mostly intellectuals. And only 3% of them will be chosen, the lucky ones elected. Hence the title! Diving into science fiction, where a woman realizes she has multiple clones. In this case Sarah Manning, back in her city, who sees Beth, throw herself under a train. Public Enemy (Belgium)
This Belgian series, inspired by the Dutroux affair, does not aim at a faithful adaptation, but rather shows the arrival in the Ardennes of a murderer of children. After twenty years of jail, Guy Béranger wishes to pass his conditional in the abbey of Vielsart . Of course, this does not happen without a few eddies … The reaction of the inhabitants, the behavior of the inspector in charge of monitoring, the monks: all points of view are discussed. Walk in the Shade (Canada)
Centered on the prison universe, however different from what one is accustomed to see. Because the plot here focuses on the rehabilitation of prisoners, their upstream work with dedicated professionals, including criminologists. Desiring glued to reality, the creators chose criminologists to 90% female, like Rachel . Which is going to be called into question following a hanging with a prisoner. The confrontations are just and realistic, the tension takes you by the throat, the emotions flock. A good series to subdue. The only challenge is to understand everything and to be done quickly with the accent of Quebec.
Cleverman (Australia and New Zealand)
So, that denounces! An Australian-New Zealand production that treats, in a roundabout way but not so much, the segregation of the Aborigines in Australia . Here represented by the Hairy, mutants chased, persecuted and imprisoned by humans, they evolve in a hostile environment and undergo deplorable conditions of life. To give a more fictional side to this political dystopia, creators inject fantasy with supernatural and mystical powers entrusted to Cleverman, the sage of the Hairy / Aborigines.
Trapped (Iceland)
There is much talk about Scandinavian detective novels, here is another part of this same talent with this Icelandic series composed of ten episodes of 52 minutes. Broadcast on France 2 last year, as a bonus, this one deserved well this honor. The plot takes place in a small port village where a body is found mutilated . The local police first blocked the occupants – and first suspects – of the ferry, before having to do it alone, following the arrival of a snow storm that prevents the arrival of Reykjavik reinforcements. As often, the secrets are numerous between the inhabitants, the characters are complex, the false tracks numerous. A kind of closed door very well conducted.
