In a recent interview, director Rian Johnson said the title The Last Jedi was in the singular and not the plural, as the French title suggests.

When the international title of Star Wars 8 was unveiled to us last January , we all wondered whether The Last Jedi was singular or plural. Then the French title arrived, The Last Jedi , and there was no longer any need to ask the question, if not who were these last famous jedi. But the director Rian Johnson himself is turning everything upside down. Indeed, for him, The Last Jedi is definitely a title in the singular and not in the plural. “It’s so much fun when people ask me this ,” he told ABC NEWS at the Star Wars Celebration last week. “As a matter of fact, I had never even thought about it. Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) will be back in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. And apparently, it will have a very impressive new weapon!
