I was a bit disappointed that they took all that time with Ragnar through the woods but left an important part of the Saga on the table that might have added to the fascinating struggle of magic, gods and men that is so much the core of Vikings. In the saga when Ragnar is thrown into the pit the snakes wont harm him thanks to the magic snake charm he was given by Aslaug (this part of the story actually was in the series I believe) - only when Aelle's men took away the snake charm the snakes would finally bite Ragnar. This would have been a chance to play again on the fascinating question if magic or the gods actually existed in the World that is shown in Vikings..
