OTTAWA | Those who had expected that Ottawa benefits from the budget in 2018 to replace the chantier Davie in the naval strategy of the canadian will be disappointed: only a amount of$ 29 Million money has been included for the renewal of the fleet of the coast Guard.

Of this amount,$ 13 Million should be invested in 2018-2019,$ 11 Million in 2019-2020, nothing in 2020-2021,$ 2 Million in 2021-2022, and then finally$ 4 Million in 2022-2023.

The story doesn’t tell yet the extent to which the chantier Davie will take advantage of it. The federal budget states that these investments are intended to ensure the long-term sustainability of the fleet of the canadian coast Guard.

During his visit to Quebec last January, prime minister Trudeau had argued “at what point the work that is being done to Davie is exceptional.”

“We are going to negotiate with Davie for the acquisition of 3 or 4 icebreakers […], because we know that we need icebreakers and Davie has the ability to deliver in a short period of time”, announced Mr. Trudeau, during a citizens ‘ assembly.

Ottawa has since awarded a small contract of$ 4.4 Million to the Davie, for the renovation of the icebreaker CCGS Des Groseillers. From Washington, dc, last weekend, the prime minister Philippe Couillard has said that he is dissatisfied with the action taken by Ottawa. “My formal request, it goes over a contract or two for the boats, said Mr. Couillard. […] There is no reason not to reinstate the oldest shipyard in canada and the largest in Quebec, in the naval strategy in canada.”
