Denis Coderre no longer has to fear prosecution on the part of imam Hamza Chaoui, who wished to obtain justice before the tribunal. Mr. Chaoui had demanded $ 500,000 for the remarks made by the ex-mayor that would have caused serious harm to the imam.
In fact, the prosecution wanted to bring Hamza Chaoui has not gone very far in the judicial process. The City of Montreal has indicated to TVA News that the superior Court has refused to address the plaintiff Chaoui of his failure to register his case within the time limit. The request of Mr. Chaoui to be relieved of the consequences of his default was dismissed with court costs.
In January 2015, Denis Coderre, mayor of Montreal, had publicly declared that Hamza Chaoui was an “agent of radicalization” and “a fomenter of social tension”, pointing out that it was a “case of public security and public order”.
“We have to deal, today, to an agent of radicalization. We are dealing with a fomenter of social tensions. And I certainly do not want, it is to stigmatize the muslim community. It is the work of an individual. It is not necessary to mix the things. It does not matter to a religion, nor a community, we are dealing with an individual. This individual there for me, it is an agent of radicalization, therefore, necessarily, we must act accordingly,” he said.
Recall that the City of Montreal had refused to issue an occupancy permit, thereby preventing the opening of a community centre islamic in which the imam provided for teaching the Qur’an and the sciences.
