A 3 year old child swept away by the waves in Ontario

The emergency services were looking for a 3 year old child swept away by the angry waters of the watercourse, the Grand River, near Grand Valley, a few tens of kilometres north-west of Toronto.

Early Wednesday, shortly before 1 a.m., a pickup truck fell into the river. The driver, who was not injured, managed to extricate himself before help arrived, but a child of three years who was on board was swept away with the vehicle.

Upon their arrival the emergency services were able to locate the woman and get out of the water. She was transported to the hospital from Orangeville to treat symptoms of hypothermia, explained the head of the fire Department of Grand Valley, Kevin McNeilly, during a press briefing mid-day on Wednesday.

The truck was found in the middle of the river, where the water flow is very fast due to the warm spell and rain. Ice blocks also float in the river, which poses a risk to the safety of firefighters, said Mr McNeilly.

The rescuers managed to attach the vehicle in the middle of the day, in order to prevent it from being carried further, but were not able to determine if the child is still on board, the truck being nearly submerged.

The cause of the accident remains to be clarified, but the investigators are studying the hypothesis of a lack of visibility due to the fog. “We could not see beyond the hood of his car [last night]”, said Kevin McNeilly.
