New day of strike action for school bus drivers

MONTREAL – bus drivers, school business Transco will again be on strike on Wednesday. They begin their third day of strike action, since there is no agreement between their union and their employer has not been found.

“During the day of 28 February, the union will consult its members at an extraordinary general meeting to adopt a new strike mandate up to the general and unlimited strike”, said last Wednesday, the trade Union of workers of Transco-CSN (STTT-CSN).

Recall that on the 23rd of January last, the members of the STTT-CSN had rejected the offers of employers to 98 %, while continuing their mandate of a three-day strike. They have already had two days strike on 30 and 31 January. On 12 February, an extraordinary general meeting, the tentative agreement reached on 31 January was defeated at 83 %.

“We regret having to exercise our medium pressure ultimate for our employer to grasp, finally, that the drivers who are in his employment do not want it tendeth to poverty. We still wanted our fair share of the money that the school boards are to provide to our employer to increase our salary properly,” said Carole Laplante, president of the STTT-CSN.

The approximately 330 drivers from Transco serve approximately 15 000 students attending schools in four school boards and one private facility on the island of Montreal.

The routes affected by the strike

Lester B. Pearson school board: 2640 students on 55 roads

Commission scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys: 3936 students on 82 roads

Commission scolaire de Montréal: 2832 students on 59 routes

English Montreal school board: 4224 students on 88 routes

The College of St. Anne, a private institution: 864 students on 18 roads
