Scientists have stated that the conditions of Saturn’s moon Enceladus suitable for the existence of archaea – single-celled organisms resembling bacteria, reports Rus.Media.

In the study, researchers recreated the conditions of Enceladus in the laboratory. The researchers used multiple cameras growth, in which archaea were grown under various conditions that may be present on Saturn.

In the result, it was found that Methanothermococcus okinawensi that was discovered at a depth of about three thousand kilometers near the Japanese island of Okinawa, can survive even under the most extreme conditions of Enceladus, excluding the maximum concentration of formaldehyde. In addition, the researchers found that the growth of the archaea generate methane, which may explain its presence in the geysers of Enceladus. However, scientists admit the possibility that methane can be formed during abiotic processes.
