TORONTO | While 77 % of Canadians say they have already been targeted by fraudsters, whether by telephone, e-mail, text message, or cloning, 56 % of them have indicated that the object of attempts of fraud at least once per month, shows a survey conducted by CIBC.
According to the stroke of the probe, 57 % of Canadians say they are very concerned about the possibility of becoming a victim of financial fraud. And 66 % say they are worried by the possibility that their elderly parents are being targeted.
For 85 % of the respondents, financial fraud is nevertheless regarded as “a fact of life in this era of digital information”.
“Awareness is the first step to fraud prevention. There are many types of fraud that can have serious consequences if you do not take measures to protect you. Your protection starts by recognizing the fraud attempts and report them at the time you made the object”, pointed out Norah McCarthy, vice president, Fraud operations, retail and management accounts to clients for CIBC, in a press release.
The survey reveals that the e-mail fraud would be the type of fraud most prevalent: 70 % of the respondents reported having been the target. Then comes the fraud, by telephone (42 %), followed by fraud by text message (37 %) and fraud from a device (14 %).
The online survey was conducted by Angus Reid, from 16 to 18 February, from 1515 canadian adults.
