The Parti québécois calls on the government Couillard to organize public hearings on petroleum exploration in the Gaspé peninsula in order to help communities assess the relevance of the announced projects.

“It would allow you to assess the economic impact of real sector of hydrocarbons to the Gaspésie, the answers to the many questions of the citizens of this region in this sector”, explained the deputy pq Sylvain Gaudreault, during a press briefing on Monday morning.

Three projects to extract oil are currently under study in the Gaspé region, or those of Haldimand, Galt and Bourque.

But, according to the PQ, the Gaspesians lack of information to make an informed decision, where the possible intervention of the Bureau d’audiences publiques sur l’environnement (BAPE).

“And the minister [of natural Resources, Pierre] Moreau said, in December last, to the elected officials of the Gaspésie, the Quebec government would provide the information no later than the 1st march on this sector in the gaspé. It is made on 5 march and the meeting has still not taken place,” said Mr. Gaudreault.

The PQ refuses, moreover, to oppose at the outset, the use of the resource gas in the Gaspé peninsula. It does, however, require that certain conditions be met before the projects can move forward, that is the social acceptability, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in comparison to imported oil and the absence of hydraulic fracturing.

    Hydrogen

Moreover, the PQ believes that the use of hydrogen, produced by electrolysis with electricity from Hydro-Quebec, could be an interesting avenue, “but it is not made there”.

The PQ has, in particular, denounced links between some of the contributors to liberal with the field of hydrogen, such as was revealed in our survey last month.

“You know that it takes a lot, a lot of investment to get to this sector”, has also indicated Mr. Gaudreault, however, recognized the potential of this energy.
