Effectiveness of the justice system: the province of Quebec in the middle of the pack

    OTTAWA – the effectiveness of The system of justice in Québec has earned him the sixth place among the 13 provinces and territories of Canada in 2017, according to an analysis released Monday by the Macdonald-Laurier Institute.

    This is a regression for the province was ranked fourth of the list in 2016, when the first edition of this analysis. The authors of the study attributed this drop to a “slight decline in equity and access to justice”.

    According to the institute, based in Ottawa, the Quebec draws its pin from the play with rates of violent crime and crimes against property among the lowest in the country. The province also has the lowest proportion of charges withdrawn or stayed in the country, while only 7.4% of charges are dropped in the course of judicial proceedings in 2016. In comparison, 43.4% of heads have been abandoned in Ontario in the same year.

    In contrast, the median duration of a criminal trial is 228 days in Quebec, the highest in the country. Quebec is also lower than average, when it comes time to provide help to the victims.

    However, Quebecers have a less good opinion of their justice system and their police services than the average Canadian, underlined the researchers.

    Overall, the Maritime provinces are those that rank the best in the country, so that they occupy four of the first five positions. For its part, Ontario was ranked at the fourth place, an improvement vis-à-vis his seventh position obtained last year.
