THREE-SHORES – A village in the Mauricie account at its head one who is without a doubt the oldest elected to the position in Quebec.
At the age of 85 years and eight months, Lucien Mongrain has undertaken a 12th term as mayor of Trois-Rives, which is located a hundred kilometers north of Trois-Rivières.
He has always been elected and re-elected by acclamation in the village of 475 souls with the exception of two elections, including last November. But it is all the same managed to beat by a very strong majority of his two opponents.
“In the last election, I would have maybe slowed down, but I saw it coming the whole gang that wanted to do miracles,” he explained in an interview with TVA News.
Mr. Mongrain is estimated to be in perfect health. “The doctor tells me all the time that there is a muscle that goes to the brain and that it is necessary to make it work. Otherwise, he adds, he is going to die and so are you.”
The venerable elected says to spend two days per week at city hall, not to mention the management of the calls received at home, the meetings of the RCM and those of the régie fire local.
Until the last municipal elections, there was the oldest elected quebec Champneuf, in Abitibi. Councillor Emile Bourassa was 91 years old. Last year, however, he decided that the moment for retreat had sounded to him.
The statistics show that in Quebec the municipal elected officials get older. In 2005, 8 % of them were aged 65 years or more. This proportion had climbed to 13 % in 2009 to 17 % in 2013 and 20 % in the election last November.
