Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is surrounded by a large amount of misinformation, reports Rus.Media.
Reaction to them varies from horror stories about the “tomato-mutants” to cautious scepticism, although in one form or another, humanity is engaged in genetic modification of products for about 10,000 years.
Perhaps this distrust partially subsided after the publication of a new meta-analysis, which shows that GM corn gives higher yields and brings tangible health benefits.
This analysis is not unlimited studies from the USA and Canada, showed that the GM maize varieties increased average yields from 5.6% to 24.5% compared to non-GM varieties. They also found that GM corn contains significantly less (depending on grade difference amounts to 36,5%) mycotoxins — Adoni by-products of colonization of crops.
Some skeptics have argued that GMOs in the U.S. and Canada has not led to increase in crops and can harm human health; however, this large-scale analysis shows the opposite.
For the study, published in the journal “Scientific Reports”, a group of Italian scientists have reviewed more than 6000 scientific studies the last 20 years and held a so-called “meta-analysis” — a cumulative analysis based on hundreds or thousands of reliable sources. This analysis allows scientists to make more extensive and reliable conclusions than if they relied solely on one study.
On a number of primarily non-scientific reasons, the question of the impact of GMOs on human health has been causing many concerns. But this analysis confirms that GMOs not only does not threaten health, but also have a significant positive impact.
Mycotoxins — substances secreted by fungi that are toxic and carcinogenic to humans and animals. A significant proportion of all non-GM and organic corn contains small amounts of mycotoxins. In the countries these substances are often removed by rinsing the corn, but the risk still persists.
GM corn contains much less mycotoxins because the plants are modified in such a way as to minimize crop losses caused by insects. Insects weaken the immune system of the plant and make it more vulnerable to the growth of fungi that produce mycotoxins.
In his analysis, the researchers claim that their work enables to draw unambiguous conclusions, which will help to increase public confidence in the products that are made from genetically modified plants.”
Although further penetration of GMOs in agriculture are bound to be new issues, this analysis dispels at least part of the concern. In addition, this information can attract the attention of farmers and businesses to hornostayivka and financial benefits of using genetically modified maize.
Some have called this meta-analysis the “last word” in the debate about GMOs.
