Here is the letter that Alexandre Bissonnette was read in to the families of the victims, on Wednesday morning, after pleading guilty to six counts of premeditated murder and six counts of attempted murder leveled against him in connection with the slaughter that occurred in the Mosque of Quebec in January 2017.

Mr. judge, in this moment that I’m free to empty my heart and my mind, I would like to say to you and to all that every minute of my existence, I regret bitterly what I did.. the lives that I destroyed.

I am ashamed of what I did. I don’t know why I asked for a gesture of senseless like that, and still today, I find it hard to believe.

Please be aware, however, that contrary to what has been said, I am neither a terrorist nor an anti-islam.

I have long had thoughts, and suicidal thoughts and an obsession with death. It is as if I was fighting with a demon that ended up having me and win against me.

I’d so love to go back in time and change things.

Sometimes I have the impression that this is just a terrible dream… a long-term nightmare.

I’d like to be able to ask for forgiveness, but I know that my gesture is unpardonable.

If by pleading guilty, I can do a little good, then, it will be already it in fact.
