SAINT-APOLLINAIRE – A referendum campaign will take place on Sunday in Saint-Apollinaire, Chaudière-Appalaches, around the project of a muslim cemetery.
49 people are expected to vote in a referendum to decide if the Quebec city region will have or not a first muslim cemetery.
The proposed location is in Saint-Apollinaire, municipality of 6000 people on the South Shore of Quebec city.
Only residents located near the area concerned will be able to vote in order to decide on a sensitive issue.
The opponents of the project believe that muslims should be buried in the sections dedicated to the deceased of the islamic creed, but within the cemeteries already existing.
The muslim cemetery would be a few metres away from a burial site, multi-faith, so much so that some citizens are asking why the muslim community would not bury its dead in this place rather than in a cemetery reserved for his exclusive use.
For its part, the muslim community said deserve the same rights as other religious communities which have their own cemetery.
