MONTREAL – A hundred residents had to be evacuated in a preventive manner, on Monday, in the borough of Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve in Montreal, because of a gas leak.
Around 11: 40, a drilling rig, which was performing work on the avenue Pierre-de-Coubertin punctured a gas line, according to the head operations of the Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal, Sylvain Legros. “First alarm has been triggered,” he said.
The quadrilateral formed by the streets Du Quesne, Bossuet, Hochelaga, and of Marseille has been completely closed to traffic.
As a precautionary measure, the authorities have also asked Hydro-Québec to cut off the current in the sector, depriving some 5000 subscribers of electricity.
A team of Gaz Métro has been dispatched in order to stop the leak.
