Mayor Labeaume has accused some politicians not to take their responsibilities, and make proof of willful blindness.

On a visit to Montreal, he was accompanied by his friend, the mayor of Montreal Denis Coderre, who came to his rescue in point of press. “The thugs, they came from Montreal,” said mayor Coderre, when his counterpart has been questioned on his statements after Sunday’s demonstration.

Of the provincial elected officials have also reacted to the comments of the mayor of Quebec city.

According to the minister of Justice, Stéphanie Vallée, the remarks of Mr. Labeaume are “part of the character. This being said, it is not our intention to change anything in the bill to ban covered faces in public space.”

For his part, the minister of public Safety Martin Coiteux has distanced himself from the mayor Labeaume. “He is responsible for his words and we don’t share all of his words”, he said.

Finally, the president of the treasury Board, Pierre Moreau, has invited all parties to express themselves. “When one becomes emotional, there is always a risk associated with it. Me, I think that if one wants to have a discussion in the public space, it is possible to do so.”
