TORONTO – The Ontario government announced, Monday, its intention to create a university “governed by and for francophones”.
If colleges and universities already offer courses in French in Ontario, the future university, however, would be the first to be entirely dedicated to Franco-Ontarians.
This announcement follows the filing of a voluminous report of the planning Board for a French-language university, last July.
“Such a university will provide access to French-language postsecondary education of high quality in the greater Toronto area and in the Central and South-Western Ontario”, explained the minister of higher Education and vocational Training, Deb Matthews, in a press release.
The ontario government intends to introduce a bill “in the coming months” in order to formalize the creation of the university.
The province has the largest pool of francophones outside Quebec in the country. Some 611 500 francophones living in Ontario, of which 430 000 in the metropolitan region of Toronto.
