After a hearty meal of celebration, when the effects of excess of food is beginning to be felt, many of us have the same reflex : provide a next day stocked. This reflex may have more meaning than simple moderation. The restriction could be beneficial, in the short and long term.

Researchers from the university of Southern California (USC, Usa), simultaneously pursue multiple avenues of research on the health benefits of fasting are alternated. This method of feeding is to eat without restriction – but still reasonable – some days, and then drastically reduce the intake of food.

And one of their discoveries is not trivial. After a few months of this diet, symptoms of diabetes types 1 and 2 could be greatly improved.

The pancreas at rest

A few months ago, Valter Longo, director of the research Center on longevity, had shown that mice genetically engineered to be obese and diabetic, the fasting alternated meant not only to make them lose weight, but also to make it disappear completely their diabetes.

With his team, he had shown that the pancreas, responsible for insulin production, and therefore implicated in diabetes when the secretion is deregulated, take advantage of these days of fasting to regenerate. By doing this, he is then able, days, full power, produce new insulin.
