When asked about a possible link between the two events, Mr. Labeaume has reported that this would be a “curious coincidence that there is not”.
The mayor has responded to Wednesday in the early afternoon, convening in disaster, a press point following the events made public on Wednesday afternoon by the islamic cultural Centre of Québec (CCIQ).
Since the attack of January 29, Régis Labeaume has often repeated that it was an “isolated act”. Should we conclude that this type of gestures of hate is no longer so isolated in Quebec? “They add up, admitted the mayor. It can’t become a pattern (…) It’s extremely worrying (…) people (while they) didn’t allow before (…) This gesture is not like Quebec city (which is an open city”.
Mr. Labeaume has been informed of the fire by the police Service in the hours that followed the event. In agreement with the leaders of the CCIQ, he has chosen discretion over the last three weeks in order to allow the police investigation to take place. This investigation is still in progress.
“We must remain united and in solidarity (…) are (muslim) neighbours. We love them,” insisted the mayor with a lot of emotion and worry in his voice.
