Scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute of silicate chemistry in Bavaria found a new method of production of renewable energy using hydropower, reports Rus.Media.

For energy conversion, the researchers used ultra-thin elastomeric film coated on both sides of the elastic layer and the insulation. They installed them in small rivers and streams, where the permanent deformation and relaxation of elastomers converts kinetic energy directly into electricity. Water distorts the film, which creates a powerful electric charge. Then elastomeric film returns to its original state, and the process begins again.

One of the main advantages of the installation is that it can be used in water at any depth. Our elastomer generators are ideal for small rivers and can operate at flow rates from 0.5 m / second and at depths of 0.5 m. Our system, which does not depend on wind or the sun, is the perfect solution. In General, one such plant can annually supply to the grid of 876 MW · h of electricity without causing any harm to the ecosystem, says project Manager Bernhard Brunner.

Elastomer generators are designed for quiet operation in shallow rivers without dams. They are suitable, for example, for use as a standalone power source for camping or in remote settlements located in the vicinity of water.
