The organized screening for cancer of the breast does not convince the French. Last year, 50.7% of the women invited to participate in this program have pushed the door of a cabinet x-ray, or 2.5 million women. A participation rate, a slight decline compared to the year 2015 (-1 point), according to the Institut de veille sanitaire.

This program of organized screening is offered to all women 50 to 74 years every two years since 2004. On the whole territory of the country, the women invited to be screened may receive a free mammogram. And unlike individual screening, the results of this examination are analyzed by two different specialists in order to reduce the false-positive and overdiagnosis.

On paper, the organization of this screening should reassure women. But it is clear that it remains at the heart of many debates and the distrust of this review do not weaken. The participation rate continues to decline, especially in the 70-74 years. Each year, the european objective of 70 % of women screened is more and more difficult to achieve.

Large gap

Nevertheless, this reality is not homogeneous throughout the territory. Out of the 13 metropolitan regions and 4 overseas territories, and 10 show a rate of participation higher than 50 %. The inhabitants of the Countries of the Loire are the most assiduous with 59.6 %. The regions Centre Loire valley, Brittany, New Aquitaine or the Meeting is not far off. In contrast, the Corsica, the Ile-de-France, the PACA region as well as Guyana does not even reach the 40% participation.
