Scientists said that in Antarctica there was a mysterious hole the size of lake superior in North America, reports Rus.Media .

As the researchers note, often area of open sea surrounded by ice, known as polynyas, formed relatively close to the border of the ice and the sea. The new formation appeared a few kilometers from the demarcation line, indicating that it was the result of processes unknown to scientists.

According to scientists, finding the hole was only with the help of satellite images. The polynya was observed in the same region in the 1970’s, then disappeared and appeared on a few weeks back last year. Now polynya opened again on 9 September.

“We are still trying to understand what is happening,” said Kent Moore of the University of Toronto.
