VICTORIA | Severely tried by natural disasters since the beginning of the year, British Columbians will be entitled to rewards from the provincial government for their bravery and their generosity.
The government néodémocrate John Horgan has announced the creation of a program tribute Saturday. “People deserve to be recognized for their assistance during the devastating forest fires and floods this year,” noted the prime minister.
The first responders who worked in the front line communities affected by these natural disasters, the people who managed the rescue, but also of the volunteers who have helped families in distress may receive a reward.
Since 1 April 2017, the forest fires have ravaged no less than 1.2 million hectares of land in British Columbia, which is approximately 24 times the area of the island of Montreal. Some 65,000 people have been evacuated from their residence at one time or another, while the fires have led to costs of more than $550 million.
For their part, the spring flooding affected thousands of people, of which about 2,500, who had to receive emergency assistance.
