CALGARY | The outgoing mayor of Calgary Naheed Nenshi was re-elected Monday night for a third term thanks to a crop of 51.2% of the vote.
Bill Smith is the candidate who offered him the hottest fight when he got 43.9% of the vote, according to the chain Overall.
During the campaign, Naheed Nenshi has faced criticism after allegations that her main rival Bill Smith had accepted a gift illegal of the owner of the Edmonton Oilers, when he was the president of the provincial conservative Party.
The muslim mayor had also complained of being the target of comments proclaiming that it endorses the shari’a, the islamic law, or, as it has allowed immigrants to settle in Canada to commit crimes, reported by the “Calgary Herald”.
Mr. Nenshi was elected the first time, in 2010, when he became the 36th mayor of the largest city in alberta. He was re-elected in 2013.
