The regions of Montréal to Québec city under a smog warning

The St. Lawrence valley and western Quebec were under a smog warning Sunday night, which is expected to continue until Monday morning.

According to what was stated by Environment Canada in the middle of the afternoon, the high concentration of pollutants is expected to begin in the evening and persist throughout the night.

This notice is valid for the regions from Gatineau to Québec city, including the areas of Lachute, Laurentians, Lanaudière, Mauricie, Montréal, Montérégie, Beauce, Centre-du-Quebec and Montmagny.

“Smog affects mostly children with asthma and people with respiratory or heart disease. It is, therefore, recommended to avoid intense physical activity outdoors until the lifting of the smog warning,” said the federal agency.

Because of this there’s a smog warning, the City of Montreal forbade its residents to use solid fuel fired cooking appliances, whether it be a fireplace, a wood stove or a pellet stove.

Wood heating is the main source of emissions of particulate matter contributing to the formation of smog in the winter. The City will also be a ban on the households that emit more than 2.5 grams/hour of particulate matter, as from October next.
