OTTAWA | The ex-NDP leader Thomas Mulcair will resign from his duties as a member of Outremont in the next few months.
A spokesperson for the NDP confirmed Monday evening that the spring session will be the last of Mr. Mulcair as a parliamentarian. The precise date of his resignation is not known yet.
He would have been hired by an academic institution, but we ignore that for the moment.
Mr. Mulcair announced his withdrawal from political life after losing the vote of confidence at the congress of the NDP from April 2016, a few months after the difficult election defeat in 2015. This fall, Jagmeet Singh was elected leader of the New democratic party.
The departure of Mr. Mulcair would leave the district of montreal Outremont open for a by-election at the federal level.
