Since Monday, the prescription drugs are free for young people under the age of 25 years in Ontario.
As announced in the budget for 2017 in the province, the measure will cover the cost of 4 400 prescription drugs to the four million children and young adults in ontario, and this, regardless of family income.
The program “Insurance-health”, the first of its kind in Canada, will enable all young people to be covered by a prescription drug insurance universal. Parents will no longer have to choose between paying for the care of their children and other necessities. This support will relieve a number of students during their studies.
This measure will extend the coverage already offered in Ontario for three million people aged over 65 years, and nearly 900,000 low-income families.
The liberal government expects that the initiative will cost 465 million $ to the State. Automatically enrolled, the users of the program need only have their health card and a valid prescription for claiming by the pharmacy.
Among the drugs covered, including antibiotics, inhalers for asthma, various types of insulin, and antidepressants.
The entry into force of”Insurance-health” coincides in Ontario with the implementation of several other measures, such as the minimum wage to $ 14 an hour, and the obligation for employers to grant three weeks vacation to all of their workers with five years of seniority.
