MONTREAL | hundreds of people in a situation of homelessness took part, on Sunday at the 140th edition of the traditional dinner of the kings of the Accueil Bonneau, Montreal.

As every year, a hot meal is served to the guests.

The mayor of Montréal, Valérie Plante, participated for the first time in the company of the archbishop Christian Lépine.

Ms. Plant has taken advantage of the opportunity to ensure that the City does everything in its power to help the homeless as the cold weather continues in Montreal. “There is a shuttle service available, the police department is across the street to ensure that a option is offered to every person in a position of homelessness. For me, it’s all a question of communication, and be able to react quickly,” she said.

Break the solitude

“It is true that it is cold outside, but at times, it is cold in the hearts of the people also by the experience of solitude, then, by coming here, people know that they are not alone. It is a precious moment for all the homeless that are here,” stressed Archbishop Lépine.

The bitter cold of recent weeks brings shelters and community organizations to scramble to help the less fortunate. “Normally, the residences separate it into two; those who receive especially at night and those that receive the meals, but without hosting. […] On account of the cold, each home adapts to give the most space possible, so that there is the least amount of people possible in the street,” explained Archbishop Lépine.

The president of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, Alain Besner, head of the social and community development, homelessness, youth, sports and leisure activities to the executive committee Rosannie Filato and the head of trade and economic development, as well as government relations the executive committee, Robert Beaudry, were also present at the dinner.
