REGINA, Saskatchewan – the Saskatchewan government announced on Monday that the sale of cannabis will be entrusted to the private sector.

Sixty permits will be issued for the opening of points of sale in a maximum of 40 municipalities and aboriginal communities of the province. They will have however the possibility to refuse the implementation of such shops, has assured the company of the games and of the alcohol of Saskatchewan (SLGA), which will keep the eye from this new industry.

The owners of these outlets will also operate an online store. They will be forced to sell only products related to cannabis.

The Saskatchewan government has rejected the option of a public corporation to handle the sale of cannabis, as this will be the case in Quebec, because of the high costs of such a possibility.

“The tens of millions of dollars that it would cost, I would prefer to see invested in schools, highways and roads of our province,” said Gene Makowski, minister responsible for the SLGA, “Regina Leader-Post”.

To obtain a licence, companies must demonstrate that they have a strong enough to ensure the inventory is thorough. A random draw will determine those who will be entitled to a permit.
