EDMONTON, Alberta – A young Edmonton man was reportedly arrested in Thailand and have been the victim of blackmail by the police, according to Global News.
Shawn Johnson, 25 years old, would have called relatives on several occasions, in the night of Monday to Tuesday, claiming to be held prisoner in a basement by three men called to be police officers.
“He said: if I don’t give them 3000 $ in the next three hours, I’ll be sent to prison. Then, when he spoke to his sister, this amount is increased to $ 5,000, ” reported Andy Vinoly, a friend of Johnson, to Global News.
The young man would have been arrested for drug possession, but his relatives doubted whether this is truly the case.
World affairs Canada confirmed to Global that a Canadian was arrested in Thailand and the consulate general of canada in the first place was in contact with the local authorities, Johnson and his family.
On its website, the government of Canada advises travellers that the possession of drugs is illegal in Thailand and that the penalties for this crime are extremely severe, up to and including the death penalty.
