Researchers from the university of Michigan reported evidence of hypersensitivity of the neurological pathways of the pain or “synchronization explosive” in the brains of people with fibromyalgia, a disease characterized by chronic widespread pain. This study is published in Scientific Reports.
“For the first time, this research shows that the hypersensitivity experienced by patients with chronic pain may be the result of brain networks hypersensitive,” said Richard Harris, co-senior author of the study. “The people were in a state of excitation of the pain pathways are similar to the networks that undergo a synchronization explosive “. The researchers ensure that this is a promising route to explore to determine how a person develops fibromyalgia.

Networks ‘electrically unstable’

The researchers recorded the electrical activity in the brain of 10 patients with fibromyalgia. The results have highlighted the networks of neurological pathways in the brain hypersensitive and unstable, with a reaction explosive at the slightest stimulation. It is important to note that there was a strong correlation between the degree of synchronization explosive and the intensity of self-reported chronic pain reported by patients.
“We see again that the brain of chronic pain is electrically unstable and sensitive,” says Dr. Harris. This type of modeling could help to guide future treatments for fibromyalgia, since the timings of the explosive can be modeled outside of the brain.

These brain regions could then be targeted with treatments of modulation non-invasive brain.
