The Montreal-alleged to have harassed the mayor of the district Sue Montgomery has briefly appeared in court on Friday, while denying any criminal behaviour.

Robin Edgar, 58 years old, was alone when he appeared before the court, at the courthouse of Montreal. Head high and look confident, he pleaded not guilty to a charge of criminal harassment to which he is facing.

According to the lawsuit, Edgar has harassed the mayor of the borough of Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce between 17 October and 12 December last. He had been arrested at the hotel de ville of Montreal, so that was a session of the municipal council.

Edgar, however, had been released with a promise to appear in court. He had agreed to submit to several conditions, is not to communicate with Ms. Montgomery, not to be close to home and not go to the church that she attends.

At a hearing on Friday, he was asked to remove these conditions, arguing that they violated his fundamental rights.

“I want to be released from it,” he said, mentioning the canadian Charter of rights and freedoms.

The Crown is opposed to a relaxation of these conditions, which are common in the records of harassment.

Edgar will return to the court on the 9th February next, for the following procedures. He said that by then, he would try to be a lawyer. The only snag, he said, is that the lawyer that may represent them is currently on maternity leave.
