Monk paisios of the Holy mountain said: “the Man pays the host on which it runs. If you work for the black master, then it will make your life a black. If you work sin, then you will pay the devil. If you do goodness, then you will pay the Christ.”

Actually harmful sinful passions much more than seven, but in 590 St. Gregory the Great divided them into seven groups conditional.

Pride

The Holy fathers called pride the beginning of all sin, which first infects those people who have some talents or with good qualities. Pride caused the first fall in the world – the fall of Lucifer.

Monk paisios of the Holy mountain said that the pride has several shades: “Pride, selfishness, vanity are one and the same passion, only in its different shades and manifestations. A satanic level of pride is called pride”.

Envy

The feeling of disappointment and inner anguish that is born in the soul of man at the sight of the well-being of the middle is jealousy. The monk Simeon Athos gives a good recipe to combat the feeling: “That spoils people’s attitudes? Envy. What brings people together? Condolences.”

Gluttony

This passion makes a man a slave to his own stomach. The food for such a person becomes not just a means to sustain life, and the object of worship and reverence. The glutton is not the only one who eats everything indiscriminately in large quantities, but also one who is overly selective in the food.

Fornication

Lust is any form of sexual activity that goes beyond marriage: promiscuity, infidelity, different perversion. But fornication is not only bodily sin, its basis lies in the human mind.
Monk paisios of the Holy mountain said, “When we are tempted by the lust of the flesh, this is not always the fault of the flesh. Carnal abuse can also occur from the thoughts of judgment and pride. First, we need to find the cause that has affected us to temptation and then do the appropriate action.”

So that passion have not mastered the body, people should avoid any thoughts that spark in her lust.

Anger

The Holy fathers share the anger of the righteous and the unrighteous. Righteous anger is a feature of the soul, given to us by God which enables man to decisively reject sinful thoughts and actions. This intolerance of sin. Unrighteous anger, as a rule, drawn to the middle and leads to quarrels, fights, insults and even murder. “If you want to be good, be strict to myself and don’t kill the others because of its severity. Be strict to yourself, and for others God sees,” says the monk Simeon Athos.

Greed

Greed is a painful desire to possess material goods and riches of the earthly world. However it is incorrect to think that all rich people infected with this sin. Greed can dwell in the human heart of all incomes, that is compelling willing to increase wealth in their favor and never is satisfied. “The one thing that true wealth is spiritual wealth, which gives Christ the King to your friends. Everything else – laugh for a minute awesesome heart, and then punish eternally the torments of hell,” says the monk Maxim the Greek.

Sadness

“All the more difficult by the demon of depression, demon of the South, which inhibits monotony and trying to entertain the soul,” says Archimandrite Kirik Athos.

Sadness attribute of the human soul, which according to the teachings of the Holy fathers of mount Athos born in idleness and laziness. To resist the agonizing passion of the monk Nikodim svyatogorets advised to work: “the Work strengthens the body, makes it healthy, and idleness and laziness make him powerless, weak and sick. Who works less passion and guile, and the one who abides in inaction, is often possessed of strong passions”.
