MONTREAL – The medical profession tends to become effeminate in Quebec : 50.1% of active physicians are female, but this proportion rises to 63% among medical students.

This is what emerges from the annual review of the profession, published by the Collège des médecins du Québec, on Monday.

The proportion of the number of women physicians increases of approximately 1 % per year, according to the professional order.

In addition, at December 31 last year, there were 261 physicians in more activities in Quebec, compared to a year earlier.

Among the 20 313 doctors practising medicine in Quebec, 9684 (47,7 %) are family physicians and 10 360 (51 %) hold a licence to practise in one of the 59 other specialties recognized in Quebec. Finally, a total of 269 physicians (1.3 percent) have a restrictive permit, or a permit issued in the framework of the Québec-France agreement.

The Montérégie is the region of Quebec, which has experienced the most significant increase in the number of active physicians in 2017, with an addition of 52 professionals. Conversely, Quebec (-12) and Montreal (-5) have seen their number of active physicians decreased during 2017.
