SAINTE-ADELE | The Coalition avenir Québec, will support a piece of legislation that gives more power to the Unité permanente anticorruption (UPAC).

“It’s going to speed things up, we will have the best surveys and much faster,” said mp André Spénard on Tuesday during a media scrum at the entrance to the caucus présessionnel of the CAQ.

Bill 107 should include UPAC a police force independent, which will allow him quicker access to certain confidential databases, for example. In December, the Security minister Martin Coiteux announced that it would also lead to a supervisory committee whose members would be chosen by the national Assembly, in the wake of the arrest of the mna Guy Ouellette.

Mr. Spénard will support the legislative measure even though it still expects the commissioner of UPAC is appointed by the government, while the CAQ would like it to be chosen by the parliamentarians. “I do not think that the minister Coiteux reverse his decision to refuse to appoint the commissioner for two-thirds of the national Assembly. I don’t see the purpose to vote against the bill just because of that,” he said.

The pq Pascal Bérubé has denounced the decision on social media. “The PQ will vote against it. In terms of the fight against corruption, the choices are now clear. The CAQ now has the same position in this matter that the liberal Party”, he denounced.
