MONTREAL – After the tax increases, the intention by the administration of mayor Valerie Plant to increase the amounts of the fines to be displeasing to many Montrealers, including several retailers.

Owners of businesses in the town centre, scalded by the increase in property taxes as well as by the work that was started recently on the Sainte-Catherine street West, requested on Tuesday via their spokesperson, Andre Poulin, as it gives a respite to the customers. “Price increases for tickets, it’s unfortunate, especially for customers who want to have a pleasant experience from shopping. A second offense, it could be higher”, said Mr. Poulin, who is a spokesperson for Destination Centre-Ville.

The latter calls for a better expenditure management, but more importantly, more creativity on the part of elected officials.

“We have the technology to change the ways of doing things, but it is still as it was 50 years ago. Bail out the coffers of the City, it is all well and good, but it’s also going to need to decrease spending because that there is no end to it. It may be appropriate to review the programs, see what is still essential. It is necessary to be inventive, we are supposed to have elected officials who said they wanted to do otherwise,” said the spokesperson.
