Researchers in Quebec believe they have found a “cure” to help compulsive gamblers to control themselves.

The team of Dr. Shirley Fecteau at the Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Québec has appealed to 16 people who have had problems of addiction to the game.

The study was to apply a helmet with electrodes on the patient’s head. It was found that a weak electric current to the surface of the skull to stimulate the production of GABA, a neurotransmitter.

In a 30-minute session, the part of the brain excited or that had a feel like the game had calmed down. Half received a placebo treatment.

Now we want to do the clinical trials, treatments that could extend over a greater period of time, from 10 to 15 sessions.

The technique can be scary, because there is a tendency to compare it to the electroconvulsive therapy, but Dr. Fecteau states that it has little or no side effects and, most importantly, that it is not painful.

The problem of gambling addiction affects between 1 % and 2 % of the adult population. The players who develop gambling addictions often see their world crumble.
