Exaspérées by a lack of staff, “recurring”, the nurses of the hospital of the Cité-de-la-Santé de Laval refused, and a few times at the end of the week, beginning their work shift as long as their team was not complete.

So, Saturday morning, nurses in the er have refused to start work as planned at 8 am, waiting rather for almost 2 and a half hours. Their colleagues at night were forced to continue their watch in the meantime. The same situation occurred at midnight and at 8 a.m., Sunday, and might happen to 16-h.

“This is an S. O. S. This is a call for help,” quipped Isabelle Dumaine, president of the Union of nurses, respiratory therapists and nursing assistants of Laval (SIIIAL-CSQ), in an interview with the QMI Agency.

According to it, the teams of nurses are almost always under-staffed, particularly in the last two months. “Each year, we are in the same misery,” said Ms. Dumaine, who argues that the staff cuts in the health care network for 2014, are the cause of this problem.

Despite the inconvenience caused by this means of pressure, the nurses are supportive, assured the president of the SIIIAL-CSQ. The “sit-ins” were to be decided by the employees, who do not obey a directive of the union, ” said Ms. Dumaine.

“We have requested a meeting with the employer,” said Ms. Dumaine, who hopes that it will be possible to find a solution for the next few months.

Earlier in January, similar events had occurred on the side of Trois-Rivières, again to denounce the lack of staff.
