OTTAWA | After a lull in the fall, no less than 1916 people have crossed irregularly the canadian border at Lacolle in December last year. It is a leap of almost 25 % in a month.

In the end, the month of December has seen the third largest number of migrants cross walk to the canadian border at Lacolle in 2017, according to new data released by the federal government on Monday. This figure is still far behind the record highs reached in July (2 996) and August (5 530).

In the country as a whole, are 1978 persons who have crossed irregularly the border, including 22 in Manitoba and 40 in British Columbia. Lacolle, therefore, remains, by far, the passage of choice for migrants seeking to flee the United States and find refuge in Canada.

In total, 20 593 persons have entered the country irregularly by 2017, the vast majority of them having done so in Quebec.
