Private schools : three-quarters of Quebecers against their public funding

Nearly 75 % of Quebecers would like to see the State withdraw its funding for the private school, says a survey conducted by CROP for the account of the Movement, The school as a whole.
“Three quarters of Quebecers to send a very clear message : they don’t want to pay for a private school and want their fees and taxes go to the public school,” said Stéphane Vigneault, coordinator of the Movement, The school as a whole, by statement on Tuesday.
The survey also indicates that 65 % of the citizens consulted are in agreement that prohibit public schools to select their students through entrance examinations.
School segregation
According to the Movement of The school as a whole, public funding for private schools and the entrance examinations have the effect of encouraging the “school segregation”, which consists in the separation of students in schools or programs based on their income or their academic results.
“The informal policy of school segregation in force in Québec in the past 50 years has done his time,” said Mr. Vigneault.
Last November, the Parti québécois and Québec solidaire (QS) had organized a joint press conference in Quebec to condemn the phenomenon of school segregation. QS was supported without reservation the idea of taking the state funding to private schools, but the PQ had refused to do the same.
QS is pleased with the results contained in this study.
“This poll is bad news for the old parties, who refuse for years to put an end to the privileges of private schools”, indicated by press release the spokesperson of QS, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois.
“Québec solidaire will present soon a plan to put an end to the privileges of private schools and to regild the blazon of the public school system in Quebec”, he added.
The survey was conducted from 17 to 22 January 2018 with 1,000 Quebec adults, according to a nonprobability sample.
