The two largest producers of bread in Canada, Canada Bread and Weston Bakeries, agreed to inflate the price of bread during a period of 14 years, indicate that documents are filed in court following an investigation by the competition Bureau.
According to documents obtained by the Globe and Mail”, the leaders of the companies agreed with grocery store chains to fix the selling price of bread at retail. The grocers referred to by these allegations are Loblaw (including Provigo), Sobeys (including IGA), Metro (including Super C), Wal-Mart and Giant Tiger.
In meetings between producers of bread and grocery “retailers have agreed to increase the price, on the condition that their competitors do the same,” said the competition Bureau.
Last December, Loblaw and Weston, who belong to the same group, had caused a surprise by acknowledging that you have participated in a cartel in the bread. To apologize, Loblaw offers to its customers, since the beginning of January, a gift card of $ 25 redeemable against products offered in a grocery store.
