“The solution passes through more of full-time staff and […] the problem is that the available staff does not take them [the full-time positions], it may be you that, somewhere, the problem is the message?” said Gaétan Barrette on Thursday at the entrance to the caucus présessionnel of the QLP to the national Assembly.
The minister of Health cites the example of a series of advertisements of the FIQ, where it denounces, in a comic strip, the burnout suffered by its members in the hospitals.
Gaétan Barrette believes that there is a “campaign” hyper-negative”: “We can-you have a positive message and constructive for the staff and patients of our network?” he pestered.
He blames the media
The “vicious circle” of which he speaks is the following: the nurses do not assume the full-time positions posted, to avoid the “mandatory overtime” (TSO). But the solution to reduce to a minimum the TSO is the hiring of registered nurses in full time positions. That is why the minister Barrette asked the unions to have a speech “positive”.
It is estimated that the TSO is a phenomenon that is “exceptional”, more rare than suggested by the trade unions. “The exception, it gives the impression that it is the norm. This is not the norm. But it happens and I don’t want to”, he explained.
It is also taken to the media, who have criticized, according to him, the recruitment campaigns of the ministry of Health. “We’ve done advertising campaigns that you have gone down in flames”, he lamented at the press point.
Unlike Couillard
Unlike Mr. Couillard, who said that the day before be prepared to consider “other ways to reduce the workload of nurses”, Gaétan Barrette is back on the collective agreement signed with the FEDERATION two years ago.
“I can’t put words in the mouth of my prime minister, but let’s get back to the starting point. In the negotiations, the solutions have been identified and accepted. It is also necessary that it be done,” he explained.
