MONTREAL – The Montreal police want to refute a rumor that circulates on the social networks that the street gangs have found a new way to rape women.
Since a few days, an image bearing the logo of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) flows, in particular on Facebook, where one can read, in English, a warning is worrying.
“Women, pay attention! If you walk from home, school or wherever, and you see a young child crying and asks you to drive him to the address that is on a piece of paper, don’t do it! Drive instead to the police station,” one can read.
“This is a new strategy by the gangs for you to violate. The situation is growing worse by the day. Tell your families and your friends, it’s happening in Montreal and Laval”, says it on the image.
Through his account in Facebook, the SPVM wanted to re-establish the facts, Friday, describing the information conveyed false.
“The publication claims that the POLICE has launched an alert about a practice that would be in the course to commit sexual assault. This message is FALSE. No cases of this nature have been reported on the territory of the island of Montreal. We invite you to be extra cautious and to verify the origin of such a message before distributing it to your contacts,” wrote the SPVM in its publication.
