Consumers trust certification Aliments du Québec and are even willing to pay more for local products, reveals a survey.
However, there is still confusion in the minds of some consumers about the difference between a logo, issued by an independent organization and the allegations made by the industry.
“There was a bit of blur in the minds of the people on the control mechanisms of certification. It happens that they do not know if the logo is based on the good faith of the industry or if it comes from an independent body that is accredited by the government or not, ” says Ingrid Peignier of the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche en analyse des organisations (CIRANO), which conducted the survey in January among 1032 persons.

The organic logo is an example with 46% of consumers surveyed believed that it was the producer who decided to put the logo or not so that the standards to be certified are very strict and are subject to control by an independent body accredited by the government.
Local more credible
Certification Aliments du Québec seems to be the most recognized and the most credible in the eyes of consumers, according to the report. More than 45 % of Quebecers say they are reassured by the fact that a product is made locally.
“In an environment where the food chain is global, with everything we hear on the problems of fraud or the presence of ingredients that we don’t know, the fact that it is done in Quebec in terms of safety and quality, it’s safe,” said Ms. Peignier.
The logo Aliments du Québec is also the only one who deserves an extra expense.
“The excitement around buying local seems to be more and more important. The certification comes we ensure that it has been done in us, and thus confirms the interest of people for the products right here, ” points out Véronique Provencher, a professor at the Université Laval.
