More than 120 000 contraband cigarettes seized in Saint-Hyacinthe

    SAINT-HYACINTHE – The police officers of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) have seized more than 120 000 contraband cigarettes during a search in one of three residences and a vehicle, in Saint-Hyacinthe.

     

    During these raids, which took place on the 1st February last, the officers from the Division of investigations on the smuggling of the SQ have seized more than 500 cartons of 200 contraband cigarettes, over 90 bags each containing 200 cigarettes, two bags of cigarillos, a dozen packets of cigarettes brands varied, more than $ 42,000 in cash, ten grams of cannabis, as well as a vehicle used to transport tobacco.

     

    Four people, suspected to be involved in the smuggling and sale of tobacco products illegal have been arrested.

     

    The suspects, aged between 37 and 62 years of age, could face charges under the Act relating to the tobacco tax.
