The government gives more powers to nurse practitioners the health-care system by allowing the establishment of treatments for certain chronic diseases and the prescription of new drugs.

The announcement was made Wednesday morning by Health minister Gaétan Barrette and his colleague of Justice, Stéphanie Vallée. To achieve their goal of expanding the practice, ministers have indicated that two new regulations will come into force on 8 march next. “The old regulation dating back over 12 years,” said the minister Valley.

These new rules allow nurse practitioners specializing start treatment for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, obstructive diseases of the lung and chronic hyperthyroidism. They will also be more limited in the choice of medications to prescribe, nor in the types of tests to offer patients.

New classes of specialist nurses will also be established to expand the practice of IPS.

The association of nurse practitioners specialized in Quebec welcomed the announcement, but warns that its members should always refer patients to a physician after the start of the treatments, which duplicates services and travel”.
